The Shelter design fair, hosted by Afternoon Light during NYCxDESIGN 2025, took place in the historic Starrett-Lehigh building, showcasing over 100 brands in furniture, lighting, and product design. Participants creatively utilized the unique 1930s space to promote community and innovation, embracing an inclusive atmosphere conducive to networking. The event was themed "Mart Nouveau,' reflecting on the evolution of design while offering a fresh perspective. Co-founder Minya Quirk highlighted the intention to modernize traditional exhibit styles while incorporating the comforting aspects of 'shelter' into the design narrative.
"We wanted to reference the industry-event tradition while also signaling that our activation is something entirely new... with a little aesthetic flair, too," shares fair co-founder Minya Quirk.
"Art Nouveau as a movement was about breaking from historical styles and creating something modern and forward-thinking, which we tempered by leaning into the larger concept of 'shelter' - protection, cover, the comfort of a hug."
