The Golden State Warriors have selected Australian forward Alex Toohey as their first pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, choosing him at No. 52 overall. Although general manager Mike Dunleavy had not seen Toohey play in person, he is drawn to his well-rounded game and defensive potential. Standing at 6-foot-8, Toohey is considered versatile enough to fit into the Warriors' system, which emphasizes playmaking and disruption. Toohey, who previously won the NBL Next Generation Award, engaged with basketball at 14 after a cricket background.
Though he intrigued many during the pre-draft process as a well-rounded 6-foot-8 forward who could do a little bit of everything on offense, it was his potential on the other end of the floor that piqued Dunleavy's interest.
"With our system and the way we play, he has the versatility to play multiple positions," Dunleavy told media on Thursday.
Toohey's first love was cricket, a sport most of his family members played. He did not commit to playing basketball full-time until he was 14 years old.
