Queens University rallies around Buddy the Dog in NCAA tournament
""We want [the players] to embody the street dog mentality of fighting for everything you can get," Leonard said."
""Buddy, he has definitely been our identity," Queens sophomore guard Yoav Berman said. "We are going to go out and play hard every game.""
Queens University coach Grant Leonard introduced Buddy, a hollowed-out German Shepherd replica, as the team's unofficial mascot. Buddy symbolizes the 'street dog mentality' of fighting for success. He is awarded to the player who exemplifies unquantifiable contributions to the team's performance. The team, which finished third in the American Sun Conference, earned an NCAA tournament spot after winning the league championship. Buddy II, the current mascot, travels with the team and has become a significant part of their identity and motivation.
