Germany's Labour Minister, Barbel Bäs, aims to tackle the pension crisis by proposing mandatory contributions from civil servants, politicians, and self-employed individuals. Currently, these groups largely avoid contributing, which strains the pension fund as payouts increase compared to contributions. The disparity in the workforce-pensioner ratio has worsened since the 1960s, putting more pressure on the system. While Bäs's proposal seeks to ensure financial sustainability, it faces criticism, notably from the German Federation of Civil Servants, who see it as an unjust infringement on their benefits.
"We need to improve the income of the pension insurance funds," she said.
According to Bas, far too few people are currently paying into the pensions pot while an increasing number are taking from it.
