Poll shows German Chancellor Merz's approval ratings are up DW 07/07/2025
Briefly

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is facing a crisis after recording its worst electoral result since 1887 during the February federal election. Polling indicates continued support decline, with only 13% projected for the SPD. The party currently governs as a junior partner in the coalition with conservative parties but faces significant challenges from the far-right AfD and other parties. Internal factions are advocating for more peacekeeping and diplomatic relations, particularly with Russia, as securing peace has historically been a key priority for the SPD.
The center-left Social Democrats were shaken to their core by the February federal election, when the party recorded its worst result since 1887.
If national elections were held this Sunday, the SPD would only get 13%, according to the poll, conducted by the research institute infratest-dimap.
The more left-wing members of the Social Democrats have accused their party leadership of doing too little to secure peace in Europe.
In June, they issued a manifesto calling for 'peacekeeping in Europe through defense capabilities, arms control, and rapprochement.'
Peace has historically been a signature priority for the SPD going back to the days of Chancellor Willy Brandt's attempts to normalize relations.
