The Christian Social Union has successfully persuaded the Christian Democratic Union to elevate the pension subsidy for older parents, known as the Mutterrente, to begin on January 1, 2027. This increase of around 5 billion annually adds 20 euros per child per month for parents with children born before 1992. While the adjustment aims to remedy disparities between pension amounts for different generations, it does not address existing issues such as the gender pay gap or broader inequality. Eligibility extends to all parents and guardians who cared for children for substantial periods.
Raising the pension subsidy for older parents, colloquially known as the Mutterrente, will be implemented a year earlier than planned, set for January 1, 2027.
The pension rise adds an extra half a percentage point, approximately 20 euros per child per month for children born before 1992, benefiting about 10 million women.
Experts indicate that while the change addresses pension disparities between generations, it does not effectively reduce the gender pay gap or overall inequality in Germany.
The mother's pension is available to all parents, including foster parents and grandparents, provided the child lived with them for a significant duration.
