German police detained a 27-year-old man and conducted searches at six properties in North Rhine-Westphalia related to plans for an Islamist terror attack. Evidence indicated that fraudulent activities were used to fund the terrorist plot. The investigation intended to disrupt any further planning and investigate details surrounding the attack. North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister praised the police for preventing a potential terrorist act, asserting that threats to societal values would be met with serious law enforcement response.
According to a joint statement from the Dusseldorf Public Prosecutor's Office and Essen police, the investigation had turned up evidence that money gained through commercial fraud was intended to go toward financing an Islamist terrorist attack.
The raids aimed to hinder any further planning of the suspected attack and its execution, as well as clarifying the circumstances surrounding it.
North Rhine-Westphalia's Interior Minister, Herbert Reul, said the raids prevented potential terrorist activity, emphasizing that anyone pursuing terror plans would face immediate action from special forces.
The detainee, a 27-year-old man with Bosnian-Herzegovinian citizenship, was suspected of reselling expensive electronic devices that he had ordered but not paid for to generate funds.
