German economy minister opposes national digital tax
Briefly

Katherina Reiche, Germany's economy minister, opposes the introduction of a tax on large tech companies. She emphasizes the importance of reducing trade barriers rather than imposing new taxes. Reiche argues for enhancing the competitiveness of German and European tech firms in the global market. Culture commissioner Wolfram Weimer had proposed a digital tax inspired by Austria's platform tax, which included a 10% rate on advertising revenue from large online platforms. Reiche's position counters this proposal, stressing the need for a favorable environment for local tech companies.
"We should not be talking about more, but about fewer barriers to trade," she told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
"At the same time, we need to improve the competitiveness of German and European tech companies, so they have a chance in international competition," she added.
