Friedrich Merz, the new Chancellor of Germany, successfully managed his first visit with US President Donald Trump, avoiding heated exchanges and diplomatic mistakes. During a brief press conference, Merz asserted Germany's commitment to support Ukraine against Russian aggression. Unlike his predecessor, Olaf Scholz, who was known for his reserved communication style, Merz brings a noticeably different approach and energy. After years of political aspirations, including a prior power struggle with Angela Merkel, Merz has finally ascended to the chancellorship at age 69, marking a new chapter in German politics.
Although he hardly had a chance to speak during the nearly 50-minute press conference in the Oval Office, he was able to say that Germany will continue to support Ukraine in its defense against Russia.
Merz, on the other hand, never hid his impatience at having to wait so long in the wings before finally securing the office he so coveted.
