Wim Wenders, approaching 80, reflects on the 80 years of peace in Europe post-World War II, expressing concern over the war in Ukraine, which he views as a threat to that peace. He highlights his privileged upbringing in this era of tranquility, contrasting it with his parents' experiences during the war. Wenders stresses the importance of actively safeguarding freedom, especially during memorial events commemorating the war's end. His recent film serves as a personal testament to the value of peace, urging Europeans to take responsibility for it now more than ever.
Eighty years after the liberation of our continent, we Europeans are realizing again that peace cannot be taken for granted. It is now up to us to take the keys to freedom into our own hands.
The decades of peace defined my life, as the war had defined the life of my parents. I had the privilege to be among the first generation of Germans who lived for 80 years in peace.
