A group of 37 lawmakers in Germany, led by Marco Wanderwitz from the CDU, are pushing to ban the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party due to its extremist views. This initiative follows the party's growing influence, particularly in eastern German states. Politicians from various parties, including the SPD, Greens, and Left, are involved, but achieving a parliamentary majority for the vote remains challenging. The push aims to prevent a recurrence of past political turmoil, as underscored by alarming historical references to the Nazi regime.
"After the terrible rule of the National Socialists [Nazis], it is important to prevent a party which is in large parts right-wing extremist and ethno-nationalist from becoming powerful in Germany again," said Wanderwitz.
"In Germany, democracy has already once been abolished by democratic means, and our continent was plunged into ruin," she said.
