The President of the Federal Criminal Police Office in Germany, Holger Munch, indicated a significant rise in cocaine use, becoming the leading illegal drug in the country. Cocaine-related offenses have increased by nearly 5%, with seizures reaching a record 43 tons in 2023—double from the previous year. The change in drug preferences is partially attributed to a severe decline in heroin due to reduced opium cultivation in Afghanistan. Experts warn that socio-economic uncertainties are driving more individuals toward cocaine use as a coping mechanism.
The total amount of cocaine seized in Germany in 2023 amounted to a record 43 tons, more than twice as much as in the previous year.
We are living in uncertain times, and in these times people are increasingly turning to drugs,“ stated the Federal Government Commissioner for Addiction and Drugs.
According to BKA chief Munch, the increase in cocaine consumption is related to a drastic change in the heroin market due to Taliban actions.
Police statistics show an increase in cocaine-related offenses by almost 5%, while heroin-related offenses decreased, highlighting cocaine's rising prominence.
