Why Balcony Solar Panels Haven't Taken Off in the US
Briefly

Balcony-mounted solar panels are becoming a popular solution for energy generation in Germany, yet similar advancements have not been realized in the United States due to regulatory challenges. Raymond Ward, a Republican state representative from Utah, is advocating for increased usage of these devices, which are easy to set up and can provide significant power. A recent law in Utah, aimed at reducing bureaucratic barriers, offers a small step forward in promoting balcony solar; however, the U.S. still faces larger structural challenges that impede its widespread use.
The technology couldn't be easier to use—simply hang one or two panels over a railing and plug them into an outlet. The devices provide up to 800 watts, enough to charge a laptop or power a small fridge.
You look over there and say, 'Well, that's working.' So what is it that stops us from having it here?
Utah's law marks the nation's first significant step to remove barriers to balcony solar—but bigger obstacles remain.
Regulations and standards governing electrical devices haven't kept pace with development of the technology.
