"Noontime attack Iris Stalzer, 57, mayor-elect of the town of Herdecke near the western city of Dortmund, was found "at her home at around 12:40pm with life threatening injuries", said public broadcaster WDR. "We fear for her life," Merz quickly wrote on X, demanding that the crime and its background "be swiftly clarified". The details of the attack or its suspected motive were not immediately known. The local police did not answer AFP's phone calls."
