Town of 13,000 people spawns a Bundesliga team
"Their stadium is undergoing renovation in order to meet Bundesliga requirements, with capacity expected to increase to 15,000 by spring 2027. Elversberg will be joined in the Bundesliga next season by Schalke, who earned the 2. Bundesliga title to return to the top flight after three years away."
Elversberg earned promotion to the Bundesliga by beating relegated Preussen Munster 3-0. Bambase Conte and David Mokwa scored early to put Elversberg ahead within 15 minutes, and Mokwa added a second midway through the second half to secure the win and a second-place finish. The town of Spiesen-Elversberg has about 13,000 residents, making it the smallest town represented in the Bundesliga. Supporters flooded onto the pitch at the 10,000-capacity Waldstadion an der Kaiserlinde after the club’s third promotion in five years. Elversberg previously missed promotion after losing 4-3 on aggregate to Heidenheim in the promotion-relegation play-off. The club’s stadium is being renovated to meet Bundesliga standards, with capacity expected to rise to 15,000 by spring 2027.
