Deutsche Bahn reported that more than one-third of its long-distance trains were delayed during the first half of 2025, missing its punctuality target. Former Chancellor Merkel criticized the practice of rejecting asylum seekers at the German border, emphasizing the need for a fair hearing for all asylum claims. Thorsten Frei defended the government's stance regarding asylum seekers from safe countries, noting the need to limit migration. Merkel's earlier statements about managing the refugee crisis were highlighted, reflecting changing perspectives on migration policy in Germany.
"If someone says 'asylum' here at the German border, they're entitled to a hearing. For all I care, it can be right at the border, but it must happen," said Merkel.
"If someone has already been granted asylum elsewhere in Europe (and) come to us via safe countries in Europe, then we are obviously not dealing with people who are fleeing, but with people coming from safe countries," said Thorsten Frei.
"We expect to close the half-year at just under 64 percent," indicating that more than a third of Deutsche Bahn's long-distance trains were late.
