"A Syrian man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a 2024 stabbing attack in western Germany in which three people were killed and 10 others injured. Issa al-Hasan, 27, arrived in Germany as a refugee in 2022 after travelling through Turkey and the Balkans and had been a member of the Islamic State. He applied for asylum to avoid military conscription in Syria. On 23 August 2024 he carried out a stabbing at a festival in Solingen, killing three and injuring ten, specifically targeting throats and upper bodies with a 15cm knife. Prosecutors said he acted to find unbelievers and to contribute to a holy war, after contacts with an IS handler and recording a pledge video. The attack influenced Germany's election campaign and boosted support for the far-right; a four-month trial included eyewitness testimony and resulted in a life sentence.
