Smartphones: How German schools are enforcing a ban DW 09/10/2025
"I can't just glance at my phone anymore, or quickly send a message during a break. At first, many students asked what the point of it was. But with time, many have come to realize that it's not so bad, and that it actually has quite a few benefits."
"A total of 51 phones were seized that's a fairly significant number considering we have 700 students," says Ptak. "And you can really see a difference, especially in the younger kids. They used to stand around in a circle staring at their screens, and now they are playing football, badminton, or board games together. It's a dramatic shift."
"The teachers are mostly in favor of it; the younger students accept it; but the older ones are not entirely happy."
Dalton High School in Alsdorf launched a pilot program called "Smart ohne Phone" requiring students to keep phones tucked away throughout the school day. Phones used during school hours are confiscated and can only be retrieved the next day by parents. Fifty-one phones were seized among roughly 700 students. Younger pupils shifted from standing around looking at screens to playing football, badminton, and board games together. Teachers largely support the ban, younger students accept it, and older students remain more resistant. The policy forms part of a wider debate in Germany about school smartphone regulation amid no nationwide rules.
