Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, renowned Nazi hunters, dedicated their lives to pursuing leaders of the Holocaust, such as Klaus Barbie, who was responsible for the suffering of thousands. They focused on significant figures who orchestrated atrocities against Jews, achieving notable successes including Barbie's arrest after a lengthy investigation. Their efforts not only brought justice to some, but also influenced legislation in Germany, leading to the 1979 law that eliminated statutes of limitations on murder and genocide, allowing for prosecution of Nazi crimes long after they occurred.
We only pursued the criminals who had made decisions about the fate of masses of Jews. Our search for and involvement in the arrest of Barbie... earned us great acclaim in France.
The Klarsfelds laid the foundation for a historic parliamentary decision on July 3, 1979: After nearly 20 years of debate over how to prosecute Nazi crimes, the Bundestag agreed that murder and genocide should no longer be subject to a statute of limitations.
