"especially after the terrible massacre on October 7, 2023."
"I am visiting Israel at a time that could hardly be more complicated,"
"presented Germany with a number of dilemmas"
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz traveled to Jordan and Israel for the first time since taking office in May 2025. Merz met Jordan's King Abdullah II and praised Amman's mediation efforts regarding Gaza. He met Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem and reaffirmed Germany's commitment to Israel, especially after the massacre on October 7, 2023. Merz acknowledged that the Israeli army's actions in Gaza had presented Germany with a number of dilemmas and said Germany had taken steps to address those concerns, a reference to a now-lifted partial halt on weapons deliveries. Germany has supported Israel's right to respond while criticizing aspects of the offensive. The trip follows a rare rift over the temporary arms restriction.
