Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen, a 51-year-old Saudi psychiatrist, is on trial in Germany accused of driving a rental SUV into a Magdeburg Christmas market on December 20, 2024, killing six people and wounding more than 300. Prosecutors say he intended to kill a large number by deliberately driving the two-ton vehicle into a mass of pedestrians. Victims included a nine-year-old boy and five women aged 45 to 75. Abdulmohsen arrived in Germany in 2006 and obtained refugee status in 2016. He posted far-right conspiracy theories online, had been active on migrant rights issues, and worked as a psychiatrist since 2020 despite competence concerns. He faces six murder counts, 338 attempted murder counts and possible life imprisonment. The trial is held in a large temporary hall to accommodate victims and witnesses, and the court can limit political statements.
