'Less than five percent' of domestic violence incidents in Germany reported
"These figures reveal what has long been hidden: the number of unreported cases of domestic and sexual violence is huge,"
"fear and a clear lack of access to help"
A survey conducted by the interior and families ministries and the BKA federal police sampled about 15,000 people aged 16 to 85 to measure unreported domestic and sexual violence in Germany. About one in six respondents had experienced domestic violence at some point in their lives. Roughly 19 out of 20 domestic violence incidents went unreported, producing an overall reporting rate near 10 percent for domestic and sexual violence combined. Men experience domestic violence almost as often as women, while women are more likely to suffer serious injuries and to be victims of sexual violence. Women, LGBTQ people, young people and ethnic minorities face higher exposure. Fear and a clear lack of access to help deter victims from reporting.
