International aid cuts complicate Congo's Ebola epidemic
Ebola continues to grow in Ituri and North Kivu in eastern DRC, with more than 900 suspected cases and 220 deaths. WHO warns the outbreak will keep spreading in DRC and says it will worsen before improving. WHO plans to send equipment and medical experts quickly, but its funds are limited. The US withdrew from WHO, previously its single largest contributor, creating a funding shortfall that led WHO to reduce and cut programs, including in DRC. Germany is now the largest donor but has reduced contributions and cut BMZ funding, with 2026 budget allocations scaled back for the Ministry of Health and BMZ. These cuts include voluntary contributions to WHO, and weaker health systems in the global south can delay outbreak detection. CARE and Caritas urge increased international investment in aid and education.
