"Twenty-five years ago, the neo-Nazi terror group the National Socialist Underground (NSU) began a series of murders targeting businesspeople with Turkish or Greek roots. Murders were committed throughout Germany with the same weapon, but, for years, the killings remained unsolved. Instead, investigators focused on the victims and their families. The first murder victim was the flower vendor Enver Simsek, on September 9, 2000. DW spoke with Gamze Kubask, the daughter of another of the NSU's victims."
"My father had a great sense of humor, which is why he was very popular with the people here. When I went into town with my father, I had the feeling that everyone knew him because he was always being greeted and hugged. That made me very proud. My father was a fan of the local soccer club, Borussia Dortmund. When Dortmund played, he always said: "Today, my homeland is playing.""
The National Socialist Underground (NSU) carried out a murder campaign targeting businesspeople of Turkish and Greek origin across Germany using the same weapon, while investigations repeatedly failed to identify perpetrators and instead scrutinized victims and their families. The first known victim was Enver Simsek in 2000; Mehmet Kubask was killed in his Dortmund kiosk on April 4, 2006. Kubask's daughter, Gamze, describes her Kurdish Alevi family background and her father's popularity and humor. Gamze works in political education, co-wrote a youth book with another victim's daughter, and is committed to pursuing justice for her father and other families.
