Germany's minimum wage set for record increase
"Millions of employees will receive noticeably more for their work -- and companies can responsibly spread the rising costs over two years,"
"an important step towards greater fairness and recognition for those who keep our country running day in and day out"
"achievable"
The German cabinet approved a two-stage increase in the statutory minimum wage, raising it from €12.82 to €13.90 at the start of next year and to €14.60 on January 1, 2027. About six million workers will benefit from the rise, the largest since Germany introduced a minimum wage a decade ago. An independent commission of economists, trade union leaders and employer representatives recommended the increase in June. The hikes fall short of the €15-per-hour target cited in the coalition agreement, prompting some SPD politicians to advocate bypassing the commission to mandate €15, a proposal criticized by conservative coalition partners.
