Germany updates US travel advice after citizens detained DW 03/20/2025
Briefly

Berlin has revised its travel advice for the US, stressing that possessing a US visa or entry waiver does not ensure entry for Germans. This update follows the detention of three German nationals attempting to enter the US. The Foreign Office emphasized that the US border authorities retain the final decision on entry. Amid tightened immigration controls under US policy shifts since January, the German Ministry is examining whether these detentions are isolated events or indicative of broader policy changes affecting German citizens’ travel to the US.
The ministry changed its advisory on Tuesday, now including a reminder that approval through the US ESTA system or holding a US visa does not automatically allow entry.
In one case, a German man with a green card residency permit was detained at Boston airport last week, held in detention since then.
The German Foreign Ministry is investigating whether the recent detentions represent isolated cases or a change in American policy post-executive orders.
Tourists from Germany and other EU countries typically have visa-free access to the US for up to 90 days; however, the ability to enter varies.
