Germany updates: Merz wants 'quick' EU tariff deal with US DW 07/03/2025
Briefly

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt proposed that Germany negotiate directly with the Taliban to facilitate the deportation of Afghan migrants. Germany has not recognized the Taliban government since their takeover in August 2021. Last year, Afghan migrants convicted of crimes were deported to Afghanistan after secret negotiations with Qatar. Dobrindt emphasized the need for direct agreements and criticized the reliance on third parties to conduct talks. His statements come amid rising far-right sentiments in Germany and focus on migration amid election campaigns. Germany is also pursuing similar agreements with Syria for deportations.
"My idea is that we make agreements directly with Afghanistan to enable repatriations," Dobrindt said in an interview with the German magazine Focus. "We still need third parties to conduct talks with Afghanistan. This cannot remain a permanent solution."
The Taliban took over Afghanistan's government in August 2021 following the NATO withdrawal. Since then, Germany has not had official diplomatic ties with the Taliban government, which it did not recognize as legitimate.
