Germany news: Snowstorm moves south after blanketing north DW 01/10/2026
"Many people are expected to brave the weather in Berlin to show solidarity with Iranian anti-government protesters"
""Berlin has shown that we are not prepared for crises of this kind. It's a disaster," union chairman Volker Geyer told the Rheinische Post newspaper. "What happened in Berlin could happen anywhere else at any time in Cologne, Stuttgart or Munich. The state must not allow itself to be made to look so foolish," he said."
"He said the privatization of critical infrastructure had led to the state being helpless in such cases as the outage in Berlin, caused by an arson attack by suspected left-wing extremists on a bridge carrying cables over the Teltow Canal."
Heavy snowfall moved from northern into central and southern Germany, leaving long-distance rail services in the north suspended on Friday and expected to resume with delays. The grounds around the Berlin Cathedral were blanketed with snow and many people are expected to brave the weather in Berlin to show solidarity with Iranian anti-government protesters at planned rallies. The civil servants' union dbb warned that other large cities could face major outages unless state crisis response improves. Union chairman Volker Geyer called the Berlin blackout a disaster, blamed privatization of critical infrastructure for leaving the state helpless after an arson attack on cables over the Teltow Canal, and demanded an urgent review of control mechanisms and legal requirements.
