Germany considers smartphone ban in schools DW 05/03/2025
Briefly

Dalton High School in Alsdorf has initiated a smartphone ban where 700 students must keep their phones off during school hours to encourage engagement and communication. Initial reactions have been positive, and student representatives believe the ban enhances focus. The program, called "Smart without your phone," is being tested until the summer holidays. With two violations on the first day, school officials emphasize consistent enforcement to ensure compliance. While many schools in Germany are exploring similar bans, a lack of uniform regulations across the country hampers broader implementation.
The students must leave their smartphones turned off in their schoolbags and are only allowed online again when school is finished for the day.
Many of us think banning smartphones isn't all that bad after all.
The initiative is called "Smart without your phone" and it encourages students to pay attention to the lessons, not their devices.
If I know that I will be without my phone for the whole afternoon and evening, I’d rather follow the rules.
