In 2024, the number of asylum-seekers in Germany increased to 3.3 million, marking a 4.1% rise from the previous year. The statistics reveal a predominant number of asylum-seekers hailing from Ukraine, followed by Syria and Afghanistan. Approximately 82% are in possession of humanitarian residence permits, while many others are in the process of status determination. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized current border policies regarding asylum-seekers, advocating that those seeking refuge should be granted due process, emphasizing that processing can occur at the border itself.
According to the Central Register, the average age of Germany's asylum-seekers is 32, with the average time being in Germany is about 6.5 years.
'If someone stands at the German border and says they need asylum, they must receive the proper due process,' Merkel said in a conversation with five refugees.
