German chancellor: Some of US security plan 'unacceptable' DW 12/09/2025
"Some of it is plausible, some of it is understandable, and some of it is unacceptable for us from a European point of view," Merz said of the US strategy."
"I see no need for the Americans to now try to save democracy in Europe. If it needed saving, we would be able to handle that on our own," he added."
"'America first' is fine, but 'America alone' cannot be in your interest. You need partners in the world, and one of those partners can be Europe. And if you cannot make use of Europe, then at least make Germany your partner," Merz said."
Chancellor Friedrich Merz said parts of the new US National Security Strategy are unacceptable from a European perspective while noting its substance mirrored comments by US Vice President JD Vance. Merz said some elements are plausible or understandable but objected to US characterizations that European governments undermine political liberty and restrict free speech. He said Europeans do not need Americans to "save democracy" in Europe and asserted Europe could handle its own democratic challenges. Merz urged Germany and Europe to become more independent in security policy and told Washington "America alone" is not in its interest.
