Away from Oktoberfest, Munich's museums serve science on tap
"It was brought into the museum in 1921 when the museum was just built,"
"It took us over a year,"
"It took us until 2022 to renovate this part and the new exhibitions with new concepts and new... everything."
Deutsches Museum in Munich marks its centenary since opening on May 7, 1925. Major renovations began in 2011, with exhibit relocation starting in 2015 and taking over a year. Several exhibits were transferred to other institutions or placed in storage until reinstallation. Some large objects remained in place because they could not be moved, including a V2 rocket and a submarine brought in 1921 that still sits in the cellar. Reopened galleries are light and airy, notably the aviation gallery, with close-up access, multilingual descriptions, staff-hosted explanations, and dioramas supporting interactive visitor engagement.
