Slate Pears Game 143: Jan. 6, 2026
"The complete Pears archive is now open! Slate Plus members can play 100+ games of Pears anytime. It's an all-you-can-eat Pears buffet! Got a word to suggest? Let us know at pears@slate.com. On Monday I read all 178 emails I received since just before Christmas and learned so many new words! Such as: SINISTRAL, AFFINAL, BELLING, EMPENNAGE, CHAGA, RHUM, HOOSH, HODS, PTOMAINE, QUINQUENNIAL, MELENA (ew), LAMINAL, HEPTAHEDRA, PARTITA, ODIST, GOLDENDOODLE."
"LAMINAL, HEPTAHEDRA, PARTITA, ODIST, GOLDENDOODLE. Thanks to everyone who sent me a nice email. Extra special thanks to Zoë Gifford, who asked about LEMAN and backed it up with a panel from Uncanny X-Men No. 265 in which the word is used. No thanks at all to the people who wrote, like, "WTF where is [random word]??" Happy New Year!"
New Pears puzzles appear every day at noon and Game 143 is currently active, with DEGUMMED noted as the longest word in Game 142. The Pears archive is now open, and Slate Plus members can access more than 100 games anytime. Readers are invited to suggest words by emailing pears@slate.com. A total of 178 emails received since just before Christmas produced many new vocabulary items, including SINISTRAL, EMPENNAGE, PTOMAINE, QUINQUENNIAL, MELENA, HEPTAHEDRA, PARTITA, and GOLDENDOODLE. Special recognition was given to Zoë Gifford for providing evidence of LEMAN from Uncanny X-Men No. 265. Some correspondents expressed frustration asking "WTF where is [random word]??" and a Happy New Year greeting was offered.
