RPG 'Starbites' Director Says The Turn-Based Genre Is Now In A Renaissance
"When making Starbites, we were told 'Who would play turn-based over action?,'"
"So we had to talk about how turn-based games have their own feature that action games don't, and there are reasons why players like them. Due to Expedition 33 and Metaphor's success, it makes us very happy that there is more demand for games that aren't just action. It created more opportunities."
Turn-based RPGs are experiencing a revival driven by recent successful releases such as Metaphor: ReFanzatio and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Starbites is a new sci‑fi role‑playing game published by NIS America and heavily inspired by JRPG classics. Ikina Games developed Starbites after a decade of mobile work adapting major Japanese franchises, and the studio views this as its most ambitious project to date. Game director Junho Bae said the team had to justify turn‑based design and that the recent successes increased demand for non‑action titles. Starbites takes place on the junkyard planet Bitter and follows Lukida's attempt to escape its confines.
