"one of the most brilliant programmers around"
"real gut punch."
"It's time. According to my doctors, all further treatments are pointless. Please donate so my kids can create a funeral worthy of my keyboard, Pixelbreaker. So I can make a worthy entrance for reuniting with my one true love"
Rebecca Heineman, a pioneering trans programmer and Interplay co-founder, died at 62 on 17 November of adenocarcinoma. She co-founded Interplay in 1983, contributing to PC hits including Fallout and Baldur's Gate and helped develop The Bard's Tale III and Mac ports of Wolfenstein 3D and Icewind Dale. Born in 1963 in Whittier, California, she began programming young, copying Atari 2600 cartridges and winning the inaugural national Space Invaders tournament in 1980. She came out as trans in 2003 and served on GLAAD's board, advocating for LGBTQ+ people. She is survived by five children; her spouse Jennell Jaquays died last year.
