Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Suggests Next Xbox Will Be Closer to Windows PC
"Remember, the biggest gaming business is the Windows business,"
"To us, gaming on Windows - and of course, Steam has built a massive marketplace on top of it and done a very successful job of it."
"To us, the way we're thinking about gaming is, first of all, now we're the largest publisher, after the Activision [acquisition],"
"So, therefore we want to be a fantastic publisher, similar approach to what we did with Office,"
The next Xbox will adopt a hybrid PC/console architecture running Windows with an Xbox interface, aligning console hardware with PC ecosystems. Windows comprises the largest gaming business, and Steam operates a massive marketplace on top of it. Xbox leadership is prioritizing PC gaming and a unified Xbox–Windows future. Microsoft shifted away from console exclusivity in 2024 and now intends to publish first-party titles across competitor platforms. The company has acquired major studios including Bethesda and Activision and is positioning itself as the largest publisher. Microsoft aims to operate across every platform and apply a publisher strategy similar to its approach with Office.
