Fan translation patches have expanded access to video game curios and vintage gems worldwide. Hilltop Works has announced a surprise project translating a lurid four-disc PlayStation RPG inspired by a real-world cyberpunk setting. The game, Kowloon's Gate, is a sprawling RPG set in the claustrophobic Kowloon Walled City, which reemerged on the outskirts of Hong Kong despite demolition in 1993. Players take the role of a feng shui expert working for a shadowy agency that monitors spiritual balance. The story involves investigating the city, surviving mazes of space and time, reawakening four divine beasts, and restoring reality’s equilibrium. The real Kowloon became a dense refuge and crime hub after World War II, inspiring major cyberpunk cultural works.
"A split between an FMV adventure game and a dungeon crawler RPG, Kowloon's Gate is a surrealist cyberpunk epic. You navigate derelict passages and encounter numerous urban wastelanders. It's a perfect recipe for a game lost on its original audience but stirred into a cult classic over time."
