Fortnite is raising the price of its in-game currency, saying it needs to 'pay the bills' | CBC News
"The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we're raising prices to help pay the bills. For years, Epic has waged antitrust battles against Google and Apple, accusing them of anti-competitive behaviour by taxing developers with a commission on in-app purchases, sometimes up to 30 per cent."
"Epic Games has done a big favour for the whole industry by fighting these antitrust cases for six years, losing all of the potential revenue for Fortnite on mobile during that time. Google eventually lowered its fees in a major settlement and opened itself up to competitors, including the Epic Games store."
Fortnite, the free-to-play gaming platform owned by Epic Games, is increasing prices for its in-game currency V-Bucks starting March 10. The company attributes the price hike to rising operational costs. This move reflects the financial impact of Epic Games' six-year antitrust litigation against Apple and Google, challenging their app store commission structures that can reach 30 percent. Fortnite was removed from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in 2020 when Epic attempted to bypass these fees. While Google settled and lowered its commission rates, the case against Apple remains ongoing, keeping Fortnite unavailable on iOS. Industry observers note Epic's legal efforts have benefited the broader gaming industry by challenging anti-competitive practices.
