Why no magnets in Galaxy S26? Samsung R&D chief explains
"About 80 or 90 percent of people are using a case, and cases with magnets are very popular these days. Samsung would rather use that extra height to give the phone a larger battery or make it thinner."
"We're still doing a lot of research to make sure we don't have any sacrifice inside the phone; when we actually achieve that, we'll integrate."
Samsung's mobile executive Won-Joon Choi explains the company's decision not to integrate magnets into phones, citing that approximately 80-90 percent of users already purchase cases anyway. Samsung believes the added thickness required for internal magnets represents a poor tradeoff when that space could instead accommodate larger batteries or thinner designs. While Samsung continues researching ways to integrate magnets without compromising phone performance, the company currently defers to case manufacturers for magnetic functionality. This contrasts with Apple and Google's approach of embedding magnets directly into devices. The strategy reflects Samsung's calculation that consumers will purchase magnetic cases regardless, making internal magnets unnecessary.
