Why a former AirPods engineer is now building heat pumps | TechCrunch
""We've got to do something different," Mary-Ann Rau, co-founder and CEO of Merino Energy, told TechCrunch."
""That's when I realized that if it was inaccessible for me - right, I'm privileged - it's out of reach for the vast majority of Californians and Americans," she said."
""If you can plug in a microwave and it works on that outlet, then the Merino Mono is gonna work on that outlet," Rau said."
"The Mono has all the usual stuff expected of the new generation of heat pumps: It's Wi-Fi connected, it can sense when people are in the room."
California's goal of installing 6 million heat pumps by 2030 is challenged by the current installation of only 2.3 million units. To meet the target, an average of 2,000 installations per day is required over the next five years. Merino Energy aims to simplify heat pump installation with its new product, the Merino Mono, which costs $3,800 and can be installed in one hour. This innovation addresses accessibility issues faced by many homeowners.
