"'Brits jetting off for sunnier shores could be packing a harmful travel adaptor in their suitcase, as a result of dangerous devices being sold across major online marketplaces. These adaptors are not just illegal, some are potentially lethal. When live pins are exposed, it only takes one accidental touch to cause electric shock, or even death.'"
"Testing revealed that the adaptor could extend more than one set of plug pins at a time, exposing the user to a 240-volt shock."
"Neither of the devices purchased from TikTok included a surge protector - a device which limits the amount of power that the plug can transfer - despite being labelled as having surge protection."
Electrical Safety First identified 15 travel adaptors sold across TikTok Shop, Amazon, eBay and Wish that failed multiple safety tests and often lacked basic protections such as surge protection. One 'universal travel adaptor' marketed on TikTok Shop, with over 50,000 sales, failed every safety test and could expose users to a 240-volt shock by extending more than one set of plug pins at once. Another TikTok adaptor bought over 1,000 times failed all but one test. Lack of surge protection and exposed live pins place users at risk of appliance damage, fires, and fatal electric shock.
