Valve seemingly has finally acknowledged that this is silly, and has introduced the ability to download games in a new power-saving mode in a new Steam Deck update."

Valve introduced a low-power download mode for the Steam Deck that allows games to download with the screen turned off. The mode is available in preview and is automatically enabled when the handheld is plugged into power. While downloading, the screen turns off and downloads continue in the background, with a progress information screen appearing if the device is briefly moved or a button is pressed. The same mode can be enabled in the settings for battery use. If battery depletes to 20%, the Steam Deck will automatically sleep and pause downloads to conserve power.
