Nio's swaps can replace a depleted battery in about three minutes and complement the company's charging network. The battery-as-a-service option allows customers to lease batteries separately, lowering vehicle purchase prices by up to about $10,000 in China. Critics cite land use and logistical complexity as challenges for swapping.
