"fancier pacifiers for adults"
"You may look at those specs and think that it's not much to work with. I don't blame you, a 10 [year] old phone can barely load Google, and this is about 100x slower. I on the other hand see a blazingly fast web server."
"Pings took ~1.5s with 50 percent packet loss, and a simple page took over 20 [seconds] to load."
"That's so bad, it's actually funny, and I kind of wanted to leave it there."
A programmer repurposed a disposable e-cigarette's ARM microcontroller to run a web server hosting a website. The selected vape contained 24 KiB of flash, 3 KiB of static RAM, and a 24 MHz processor. Initial network performance was poor with ~1.5s pings, 50% packet loss, and pages taking over 20 seconds to load. A coding bug that caused the program to read one character at a time was fixed, dramatically improving throughput and responsiveness. The outcome demonstrates surprising compute capability in throwaway consumer devices and highlights creative hardware repurposing possibilities.
