The Indian government initially demanded that all mobile phones sold in the country include the Sanchar Saathi app within a 90-day window. Several major manufacturers, including Apple, publicly refused to comply with the mandatory pre-installation requirement. Following this pushback, the government reversed course and decided not to enforce pre-installation on device makers. The Ministry of Communications cited growing voluntary acceptance of Sanchar Saathi as the rationale for dropping the mandatory requirement. The change removes the compulsory compliance deadline while allowing the app to continue expanding through non-mandatory distribution channels.
