The Wear OS 5.1 update introduced Channel Sounding for the Pixel Watch 3, enhancing Bluetooth location accuracy. However, this feature is dormant until supported by more devices. The Bluetooth SIG announced Bluetooth 6.0, which prominently features Channel Sounding—not just a support for headphones but a method of achieving centimeter-level positioning and directional awareness using existing Bluetooth hardware. Unlike Ultra-Wideband, which needs special hardware, Channel Sounding can leverage devices already equipped with Bluetooth, offering a cost-effective solution that many devices will support soon.
Channel Sounding improves device location accuracy using Bluetooth, but it's not yet operational due to the need for multiple compatible devices.
