A 24-hour walkathon fundraiser organised by a student council raised more than €1,000 for Waterford Hospice and is a few hundred euro short of a €1,500 target. The walk ran from 9am on Monday May 11 to 9am on Tuesday May 12. The event honoured the late principal Michael (Mick) Weafer, who died in University Hospital Waterford after a short illness at age 41. He previously worked as a guidance counsellor at St Mary’s CBS Enniscorthy and as principal of Kennedy College in New Ross. He also chaired the Blackstairs Community Playschool, supported the DreamBig Foundation, and was deeply involved with the Enniscorthy Shamrocks GAA as captain and player, leading to major championship successes.
"A 24-hour walkathon fundraiser by Selskar College in honour of the school's late principal Michael (Mick) Weafer, has raised more than a €1,000 for Waterford Hospice and is just a few hundred euro away from its €1,500 target."
"The walk which took place from 9am on Monday May 11 until 9am to Tuesday May 12, was organised by the school's student council."
"There was a huge outpouring of grief in August last year, after Mick passed away in University Hospital Waterford following a short illness at the age of 41. At the time, the former guidance counsellor in St Mary's CBS Enniscorthy, and much-loved former principal of Kennedy College in New Ross, was principal in Selskar College."
"Mick led the club through thick and thin and was a guiding light for the team, culminating in an unforgettable back-to-back championship victory of 2013 and 2014. He was also their captain during their Leinster GAA Club Hurling League win in 2010, which is regarded as another proud moment in the club's history."
