Wexford community raises over 8,000 to send medical student to Panama to provide medical care
A fundraiser raised €8000 to support a Wexford medical student’s mission to provide medical care to remote communities in Panama. The student will spend a month in Central America helping Floating Doctors deliver healthcare where people often have little or no access to doctors or hospitals. Many served communities are located deep within jungle and mangrove forests, making regular medical access difficult. The student is undertaking the hazardous journey as part of final-year medical studies at RCSI and is financing the trip from personal resources. To volunteer, he needed to provide €3,000 to €5,000 in medical supplies for use during the stay. A variety show in Clonroche helped raise funds, featuring local performers and public figures, and the team expressed being overwhelmed by community support.
"A recent fundraiser was able to raise an incredible €8000 to help fund a Wexford medical student's mission to provide medical care to remote communities in Panama. Éanna Doyle from Coolaught in Clonroche, Enniscorthy, will spend a month in Central America helping the medical charity Floating Doctors provide healthcare to communities that would otherwise have little or no access to medical services."
"Many of the villages and communities served by Floating Doctors are located deep within jungle and mangrove forests where people often have little or no regular access to doctors or hospitals. He is undertaking the hazardous journey as part of his final year medical studies at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) and is financing the entire trip from his own resources."
"In order to join Floating Doctors as a volunteer, Éanna needed to provide between €3,000 and €5,000 in medical supplies which will be used during his month long stay to help communities most in need. To help fund the trip, a variety show was organised in Clonroche, with a number of talented groups getting involved to help ensure the night was a resounding success."
""The last weekend still has not sunk in. A huge, huge thanks to every person who supported the show on the night, who donated, who helped out running the show, and who was involved in any way - no matter how small. Our hearts are absolutely full after the variety show and the support has been simply incredible.""
