""We're looking at really going to the people that are needing it the most. We would like the money to get there as fast as we can, but we'd like to give it also to organizations that we can actually rely on," Manasan said on Monday. "It's really sad what's going on in the country right now. And I've been inquiring around which other organizations in Toronto are doing this fundraising efforts. And sad to say, there's really no concerted, co-ordinated effort that's happening right now.""
"Typhoon Fung-wong blew out of the northwestern Philippines on Monday, setting off floods and landslides, knocking out power to entire provinces, killing at least eight people and displacing more than 1.4 million others. The country was already dealing with the devastation wrought by Typhoon Kalmaegi, which left at least 224 people dead in central provinces on Nov. 4 before pummeling Vietnam, where at least five were killed."
Non-profit organizations and the Catholic Church in Toronto are raising funds to aid people in the Philippines after two recent typhoons killed hundreds and displaced more than a million. Groups are encouraging financial donations as the fastest way to deliver assistance to affected communities. Local organizations including Gawad Kalinga Canada and the University of the Philippines Alumni Association of Toronto are coordinating fundraising and seeking reliable partner organizations to receive funds. Typhoon Fung-wong caused floods, landslides, power outages and displaced over 1.4 million people. Typhoon Kalmaegi earlier killed at least 224 people in central provinces and also struck Vietnam. The Archdiocese of Toronto is directing funds to Catholic partners in the region.
