Hundreds protest in Dublin calling for emergency disability payment
"This demonstration is about an immediate emergency payment for disabled people. Just remember the Government's budget left disabled people €1,400 worse off, that was a despicable and heartless thing to do in the teeth of a cost-of-living crisis. There is so much that needs to change for disabled citizens but in the immediate here and now they need action and help simply to pay their bills, simply to get by."
"I really cannot understand a Government that recognises the additional cost of living with disability, a Government that surely recognises we are living in a cost-of-living crisis, a Government with huge resources - the mean-spirited approach to our disabled citizens is, in my mind, unforgivable. This needs to happen and it needs to happen very, very quickly."
Disability advocacy groups including the Irish Wheelchair Association, Disability Federation of Ireland, and Access for All organized a public rally at Parnell Square to demand emergency payment for people with disabilities. The protest was prompted by last year's budget which removed support payments, leaving disabled individuals up to €1,400 worse off annually. Multiple political parties including Sinn Féin, the Social Democrats, Labour, People Before Profit-Solidarity, and the Green Party supported the demonstration. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald attended and criticized the Government's approach as mean-spirited and heartless during a cost-of-living crisis, calling for immediate action to help disabled citizens pay bills and meet basic needs.
